Goddesses, Houston, Happehatchee
|
|
Hi Everyone---
You can still listen to the free Goddesses in Everywoman virtual seminar if you go to: https://shiftnetwork.isrefer.com/go/gwJSB/JSBMD/
and register. It provides an understanding of archetypes, an
overview of the goddess archetypes, and was spontaneous and personal. It
is the introduction to my ten module course which begins
on February 17.
I have a sense of "good-anticipation"!
For the first time, ever --I
will be able to delve into each goddess archetype in depth. I will
introduce them, tell their myths, and expand on the meaning of their
stories and symbols as I go along. You will see how they act in our
lives and on others.. The potential of this course and my expectation is
that there will be Aha! moments--those insights that
illuminate and accompany a profound understanding, a deep recognition
of something in yourself or about someone who has mattered to you or
matters now.
|
|
It is important to put the goddesses archetypes in context, which is how I will begin this course. The context is your life: your personal myth, your individuation, your soul work. On
being asked "How do you know your personal myth?" Joseph Campbell
responded, "What gives your life bliss and harmony? Find it and
follow it!" In my words, the answer would also be phrased as
questions: "When are you (were you) authentically
yourself? What gives you (gave you) joy? What have you
learned through your suffering or the suffering of others? What truly
matters to you?" For periods of life, we may be in harmony with
our path and then we may lose our way. Reconnecting with archetypal
depth is restorative.
That
this course is happening at all is a result of my response to a
synchronistic series of events; in the same way that I unintentionally
became an author. Synchronicity is the concept of "meaningful
coincidence" a word coined by C.G. Jung. Synchronistic events are "like
waking dreams," which was a chapter title in my first book, The Tao of Psychology: Synchronicity and the Self, which precededGoddesses in Everywoman.
Jungian concepts are real to me as are archetypes, especially the
archetype of the Self. Jungian psychology is full of what I think of as
"Concept Words" that can only be really understood through the combined
consciousness of mind, heart, and soul.
There is a bullet-list of what I will cover in each of the ten modules,
but what then comes into my mind as examples, is open to spontaneity,
synchronicity, and the grace that comes from trusting that teaching
this course is part of my unfolding path. I believe that your questions
and presence will contribute to this invisible field that we will share
over time. It is also about utilizing the The Shift program's
capability to put you in circles of four, an option that follows each
module, which I believe will contribute toward The Millionth Circle: How to Change Ourselves and The World.
I invite you to come with me on this adventure--with love, hope, perseverance, trust, and optimism--my activist mantra! | |

In Houston with Siegfried
I got an invitation from the Houston Grand Opera to talk about Siegfried and was delighted to say yes!, It gives me an opportunity to revisit Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle,
to remember how I got transformed from being indifferent into "a
Ringhead"-- the equivalent of being a follower of the Grateful Dead. I
learned that the Houston Grand Opera had been introducing the four
operas that make up the Ring of the Nibelung, one opera
each season. This season it will be Siegfried, the third in the series. I
plan to speak about "Siegfried as the Lonely Hero and Self-Made
Man." The characters and the archetypes in the Ring Cycle are
fascinating because they are major characters in many dysfunctional
families. Opera can be like having a Big Dream with deeply felt,
evocative sound track.
|
|
| The
Ring Cycle tells of authoritarian fathers obsessed with acquiring power
and the effect for three generations on sons and daughters. Adult
children raised to be extensions of a parent's ambitions or needs find
themselves--like Siegfried, asking "who am I?" With his innate strength,
lack of empathy and fearlessness, Siegfried personifies the
lonely hero who becomes a self-made man. He awakens Brunnhilde whose
punishment for disobeying Wotan was to be made helpless and unconscious.
The opera is rich with symbols and symbolic figures: the woodbird,
Fafner the dragon, the dwarves Mime and his brother Alberich, and Wotan
as the Wanderer.

At the Jung Center of Houston with Artemis
|
|
I'll be speaking about "Artemis the Goddess of the Hunt and Moon, Archetype of the Activist and Feminist" at a Friday evening lecture, followed by a workshop on Saturday on
"Path with Heart, Heart as Compass, Heart Activism." In late
November and early December, I traveled to London, Barcelona, and Rome,
taking my new book Artemis: The Indomitable Spirit in Everywoman in
English, Spanish, and Italian editions-- on the road. Now I am going
with Artemis to the Houston Jung Center that warmly welcomed me to
speak on the Tao of Psychology over thirty years ago, when both of the
two women non-analyst founders were alive and this was--as it still
is--a center for the arts as well. Since then, I've returned several
times. Their building is a beautiful one, located in the museum
district..

Happehatchee
I met Ellen Peterson (1923 -2011) when the land she owned that is now
the Happehatchee Center was coveted by land-developers who were trying
to acquire her property. She wanted to preserve the wilderness of the
land and was weary and feeling her age. Happehatchee was alongside the
Estero river. It had been owned by the Girl Scouts. Ellen bought
it in 1972 and had kept it as a retreat for groups, including Girl
Scouts. I saw photographs of the property, and recall a swaying walkway
bridge that crossed over the river, the greenness of Florida riverfront
left wild, and some old buildings. She spoke of being weary of the fight
to keep the land from the developers. I drew out her story in my
workshop, the last one I did in SW Florida (2006). Women asked her for
more details and wanted to know what they could to help. Ellen mentioned
a demonstration at the State House and the need to form a
non-profit--and got volunteers! (makes me feel that a few strands
of my activist DNA got woven into this story) She had hopes that an
organization with ecological and spiritual values would take over as
stewards for the land. I heard about the progress of Ellen's dream
from Ann Smith, a convener of the Millionth Circle who became involved
at helping Ellen's vision come true. I am looking forward to coming to
Happehatchee, I can see from the website how beautiful its buildings
have become. It a sacred space, a mother nature-artemis place for me to
speak of the Indomitable Spirit of Artemis and lead a Path with Heart
workshop.
