Random Information & Unrelated Thoughts
Dear Friends:
The
following is a "Patchwork" of information, photographs, a
drawing, announcements, and thoughts. It is what has come to mind or to
my attention. I always hope that something in these occasional
newsletters will be of value to someone and may even be a synchronicity.
This collection of random information precedes my Schedule of talks and
workshops.

why our survival today as a species and a planet will almost certainly
depend on it. #JoinTheConversation in a live webchat after the show with
Jean Shinoda Bolen and Roger Walsh. Submit your questions via Global Spirit's Facebook Page or email to info@cemproductions.org
Streamed online globally, followed by a live webcast with program guests.

Mercury Retrograde; May 19 - June 11
September 17 -October 9
Whenever
Mercury goes retrograde, Hermes the messenger god is out of sorts, not
on his usual straight forward course. Communication, including
electronic devices and travel become fraught. Practical
Preparation means not being surprised, not taking what goes wrong
personally, and avoiding confrontations and contracts and too tight
travel schedules when possible. If you have an option to wait for
retrograde to pass or can allow for delays and miscommunication, it
helps. Anything that does go wrong can also handily be blamed on Mercury
in Retrograde. Sending this newsletter out, now--for example?

I
gave a workshop at the Dream Institute in Berkeley a week ago, where
there were a few familiar names, one was Ruth Gendler, artist and author
of Book of Qualities. I loved this whimsical and wise book of words and drawings, and wondered how she described COURAGE:

"Courage. Anger. Love: Something to Say, Someone to Listen"
This is the title of an on-stage conversation between Terry
Tempest Williams and me at the Parliament of the World's
Religions, Salt Lake City (October 15 -19, 2015) The words are hers, which I took from When Women Were Birds: Fifty-four Variation on Voice. Terry is best know for her environmental literature classic, Refuge.

Crow and Weasel
In the children’s book by Barry Lopez, Crow and Weasel, two
young men set out on a hero's quest, and are returning from journeying
beyond their tribes’ known world, when they encounter wise-woman Badger,
who “badgers” them to tell their story well. When they initially are
annoyed at her for asking them for details, she says:
“The
stories people tell have a way of taking care of them. If stories come
to you, care for them. And learn to give them away when they are needed.
Sometimes a person needs a story more than food to stay alive. |
|
That is why we put these stories in each others’s memory. “ The key sentence that I quote in Close to the Bone: Life-Threatening Illness as a Soul Journey is
“Sometimes a person needs a story more than food to stay alive.” It
applies to getting a diagnosis and assuming the inevitable downhill
course or death from the disease, until you meet a survivor who had the
same diagnosis and same dire prognosis, and is thriving and healthy. A
new story now can take hold, the message is conveyed to all the cells of
the body via neuropeptides, which may lead to a remarkable recovery. In
all kinds of circles, including those based on AA, on women’s circles
with a spiritual center, where people tell their stories—the truth of
their lives become stories that can inspire someone else, or take away
shame, or make a connection; "if she could do that, I could, too!"

Gloria Steinem on the transformative power of small groups (circles) of Women
|
|
This
is Gloria Steinem being her inspired and inspiring self. in these two
segments, she talked about small groups or circles as the basis of real
change. When I listen to what she is saying—the text supports the ideas
in The Millionth Circle: How to Change Ourselves and The World.
Critical mass, tipping point, morphic field—the proliferation of
circles with a spiritual center, until the metaphoric “millionth circle”
forms; this is the one that tilts the scales, reaches critical mass,
tipping point, and ends patriarchy. Circles with a spiritual center
includes all recovery groups based on the AA model.
| |
|
“All
big change starts with small groups meeting regularly- the women’s
movement, the civil rights movement, the Chinese revolution. You can’t
do it by yourself to create a different set of possibilities. The need
is to have an alternative regular space to discover than you aren’t
crazy, the system is crazy. And this needs to be a regular part of your
life.
My
wish for the Women’s Movement: the ideal structure would resemble a
whole lacework of regular women’s meetings and drop in meetings like AA
everywhere, a whole lacework of little groups meeting in school gyms,
church basements, around village wells, where any woman can drop in,
leaderless, free, with goal of supporting each other’s self authority.
This is what we need.

Honk! Honk! Honk!
I
received many heart-warming comments to my last newsletter "Lead Goose
is Tiring," and the change in my activist mantra re advocacy for 5WCW
from "Love, Hope, Perseverance, and Optimism" to "Love, Hope, Trust, and
Optimism. I want to see the sky filled with "a river of birds in
migration, a nation of women with wings." Birds that fly in V-formation
and ongoing circles with a spiritual center differ in shape but
share what is important. Circles help members find their wings, stretch
their wings, and provide wind under their wings. It takes courage to
fly, but rising together and flying together makes it possible to see
further and go further.

FEATHERED PIPE RANCH — MONTANA
Water, Moon, Yin: A Women’s Retreat
June 20 -27, 2015
For the first time, a river will run through the workshop–we will
journey down the Missouri River in the middle of the week. The moon will
be moving out of new moon into first quarter when we begin, which is an
aspect of Artemis the Goddess of the Hunt and Moon, archetype of the
sister, goal achiever, and activist, whose realm is the wilderness.
There will be time to listen to stories and myths, to be playful, to be
in circle, to have opportunities for friendship and solitude. In the
midst of the beauty of the outer world of big sky, trees, hills and lake
at Feathered Pipe, the inner world is evoked, the inner child
remembered.

August 16 - 21, 2015 "Your One Wild and Precious Life: A Deepening Gathering for Women" The
premise of my Jungian, feminist, and spiritual perspective begins with
the certainty that it matters what we do with our “one wild and precious
life,” a quote from the poet, Mary Oliver. To find and live our
personal myth, is to be true to who we are. In this week, there will be
time to hear stories and myths that are about us, time for
self-reflection and perhaps to discover sources of meaning in our lives.
Esalen is a most beautiful place.
