The Artemis Effect
This article is from The Intelligent Optimist, which is published in the USA and Holland. Journalist Valerie Andrews took the main attributes of Artemis from Artemis: The Indomitable Spirit in Everywoman to make the point that Artemis is the prototype of female activism. The result is a visually stunning, illustrated article. She cites contemporary examples of little known activists from all over the world, as well Facebook's  Sheryl Sandberg's  Lean In Circles, Code Pink,  "Bring Back Our Girls" campaign in Nigeria, and the Millionth Circle movement. My initial reaction as the author on which she based this article, was simply, WOW!

Andrews made specific connections between the attributes and mythology of Artemis the Goddess of the Hunt and Moon and activism:

1. Artemis as midwife, Artemesia the herb that eases labor named for her, activism for teen mothers, safe pregnancies.
2. Pre-pubescent girls called Arktoi or little bears, were "under the protection of Artemis" : anti-tafficking of girls. opposition to early marriage.
3. Artemis as a skillled huntress --represents self sufficiency, living off the land.
4. Artemis as Guardian of nature and animals, mountains, springs, and forests as her sacred precincts: environmentalists, animal protectors.
5. Twin sister of Apollo -- relationships with men as equals.
6. Goddess of the moon, Artemis governs the realm of quiet and reflection.

UPDATE ON 5WCW
UN 5th World Conference on Women
Efforts at UNCSW and in Delhi, India

March 9-20, 2015 the UN CSW59  meets in NY with Parallel Events presented by NGOs during the same time, beginning with Consultation Day on March 8. The theme of the 59th session of the Commission on the Status of Women is the 20 year review of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action For the complete text of this document: Click Here  Forty-five of the 195 member states of the UN with 4 year terms serve on the CSW will be meeting. Meanwhile, an estimated 3000+ women from Non-govenmental Organizations will come to attend and present workshops and panels at CSW parallel events. At  4WCW in Beijing, 40,000 women and girls participated in the Forum, while Representatives of the member nations at UN 4WCW met and signed the Declaration and PFA.

The official body creates the documents that governments sign and are expected to uphold. The informal Forum of women who hold parallel events bring women and girls together to learn and find support in what becomes a political, psychological, and spiritual process of empowerment--from each other. Beijing began a process that continued to affect women, long after the meeting ended. Officialdom does not see that grassroots women are the force for real change; feminism creates political will at the top. Recently, when women in India took to the streets in protest,  laws against rape began to be enforced, making India the country with the most active women's movement. One good reason 5WCW should be in Delhi, it is a city that could easily accommodate 100,000 women.

In New York for the CSW: I will be with other advocates for 5WCW & Forum, and am a participant on two panels and will be giving a lecture on Artemis as the Indomitable Spirit in Activists (see Upcoming Events for details)
In Delhi, India:  India Supera and Elisabeth Baerg Hall, M.D. will be meeting with a series of people in India to further the effort to gain Prime Minister Modi's support to offer India as host country for 5WCW & Forum and direct India's ambassador to the United Nations to introduce this in the General Assembly.

FEATHERED PIPE RANCH — MONTANA
Water, Moon, Yin: A Women’s Retreat
June 20 -27, 2015
For the first time, a river will run through the workshop–we will journey down the Missouri River in the middle of the week. The moon will be moving out of new moon into first quarter when we begin, which is an aspect of Artemis the Goddess of the Hunt and Moon, archetype of the sister, goal achiever, and activist, whose realm is the wilderness. There will be time to listen to stories and myths, to be playful, to be in circle, to have opportunities for friendship and solitude. In the midst of the beauty of the outer world of big sky, trees, hills and lake at Feathered Pipe, the inner world is evoked, the inner child remembered. -

August 16 - 21, 2015  "Your One Wild and Precious Life: A Deepening Gathering for Women" The premise of my Jungian, feminist, and spiritual perspective begins with the certainty that it matters what we do with our “one wild and precious life,” a quote from the poet, Mary Oliver. To find and live our personal myth, is to be true to who we are. In this week, there will be time to hear stories and myths that are about us, time for self-reflection and perhaps to discover sources of meaning in our lives. Esalen is a most beautiful place.
